PhD position in Information Systems at Uppsala University, Sweden

Uppsala University hereby declares the following positions to be open for application:

PhD Student Specializing in the design and development of social media applications

at the Department of Informatics and Media

Project description: This announcement concerns a PhD position in Information Systems in the project “What is the significance of economic incentives for the choice of university education?” funded by the
Swedish Research Council and run in collaboration with the Institute for Labour Market Policy Evaluation (IFAU). The successful candidate will work on the parts of the project that deals with online data collection, including design and development of social media applications for this purpose.

Research in Information Systems at Uppsala University is concerned with use and development of IT-based systems with a special focus on the relationships between developers, users, organizations and society. The aim is to increase understanding of how IT can create value for different stakeholders. The research is both theoretical and practical. Different research methods are employed, such as traditional qualitative and quantitative social research methods (including, e.g., interviews and surveys) as well as construction and evaluation of IT systems. Qualifications expected: We seek a candidate with a genuine interest in and good understanding of software and information systems development. Experience from social media and related software development environments, for example, experience from development of Facebook apps, is desired. Knowledge of and interest in quantitative research methods are also an advantage. A master’s degree in information systems, software engineering, or equivalent is required. Holders of a PhD position shall first and foremost focus on their own research education. Additional work tasks at the department (teaching and administration) may be required (up to 20%). In the appointment of PhD students, the essential criterion is the candidate’s expected ability to successfully complete the education.
There are local salary placement guidelines. The first year entitles to a stipend (utbildningsbidrag) after which the position transforms into a fully salaried PhD position (doktorandtjänst). Someone may be employed as PhD student for a maximum of eight years, albeit not longer than what is equivalent to four-year full-time PhD studies.
