Eradication of polio from Afghanistan and certification of its eradication.

Description of duties:

Purpose of the Post:
To provide technical support to Ministry of Public Health on polio eradication in Northern regions of Afghanistan in developing, implementing and evaluating the various strategies of polio eradication and routine immunization.

The incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Supervise and support the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Supplemental immunization activities (Supplementary Immunization Activities) in the field and prepare the necessary reports.
2. Take all necessary measures to ensure achievement/maintenance of certification standards Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance including routine reporting and active surveillance.
3. Undertake regular performance reviews and ensure proper performance.
4. Providing inputs to update guidelines, training modules and other materials to assist in development of monitoring and evaluation tools.
5. Ensuring quality of trainings and other capacity building activities for national and field staff.
6. Undertake advocacy activities and meetings with senior officials to ensure their full support and commitment and engage new partners to strengthen Routine Immunization/Poliomyelitis Eradication activities.
7. Coordinate with the local health authorities on routine immunization activities, facilitate developing plans for implementation of RED approach policy.


Essential: University degree in Medicine and Masters Degree in Public health or epidemiology or biostatistics.

Essential: At least seven years experience at the national and international level in EPI (Expanded Programme on Immunization)/ Polio eradication related activities.

Desirable: Working experience with NGOs / UN agencies / Ministry of Public Health

Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of another working language of WHO an asset.

Note: In view of the current security situation, Afghanistan is declared as a non-family duty station; i.e. dependents are not allowed to visit or reside with the staff member at the duty station. The salary, post adjustment, benefits and allowances will be determined as applicable at the time of recruitment.

Annual salary:

US$67,483 at single rate
US$72,467 with primary dependants

Post Adjustment:
56.5 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
