Scholarship Opportunities in US

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has announced that it is now accepting applications for U.S. Government-sponsored exchange programs focused on the education sector.

The programs will provide Iraqi high school and university students and educators with the opportunity to travel to the United States to exchange ideas and build linkages with their American colleagues.

These programs work to support the goals of the U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement and to build ties between the United States and Iraq.  Specifically, they are working together to promote cultural and educational exchanges to forge strong, long-lasting bonds of friendship and mutual respect.

The following programs focused on students, teachers, and professors are now accepting applications:
  • Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI):  The SUSI program offers university faculty, secondary school teachers, and students the opportunity to participate in five- or six-week exchanges in the United States.  The programs are organized around a central theme and aim to strengthen curricula, provide opportunities for a deeper understanding of U.S. institutions and culture, and enhance leadership skills.  To apply, e-mail BaghdadSUSI@state.gov.  The deadline for applications is November 27, 2011.
  • Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program:  The Fulbright program will bring 35 junior Iraqi scholars to U.S. institutions from July 7 through September 15, 2012, for faculty development, mentoring, and cultural exchange activities.  Full-time Iraqi university faculty members with fluency in English, an MA/MS degree, and at least five years of teaching experience are eligible to apply.  Scholars should have professional or academic experience in the following fields of study:  Science and Technology, Engineering, Linguistics/English Teaching, Environmental Science, or Agricultural Science.  To apply, visit https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/scholars/30/. The deadline for applications is December 16, 2011.
There is no cost to apply to these programs. The U.S. Department of State will fully fund participants’ travel, educational program costs, health insurance, housing, and a modest living stipend.
